Variety of motion tracking device tests: Apple Watch measures heart rate most accurately

Electronic enthusiasts eight o'clock: According to foreign media reports, the latest research shows that in seven sports tracking devices, Apple Watch has the lowest error rate when measuring user heart rate, surpassing Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge, Microsoft Band, Mio Alpha 2 , PulseOn and Samsung Gear S2.

This study focused on the accuracy of wristband devices for measuring heart rate and calorie expenditure. Sixty volunteers participated in the study, including 29 men and 31 women. Each volunteer wears a variety of sports tracking equipment and is engaged in cycling, running and walking.

Compare the data obtained from these devices with the results of the motion tracking "gold standard" approach. The latter uses an electrocardiograph to measure heart rate and uses medical-grade indirect calorimetry to measure calorie expenditure. An error rate of 5% is considered an acceptable range.

In all forms of exercise, Apple Watch measured the lowest median error rate for heart rate, 2% (from 1.2% to 2.8%), while Samsung Gear S2 was the highest with 6.8% (from 4.6% to 9%). In addition, in the walking test, Apple Watch measured the heart rate error rate is better than the competitor's product.

For the walking test, the median error rate for both devices was less than 5%, including 2.5% for Apple Watch (from 1.1% to 3.9%) and 4.9% for PulseOn (from 1.4% to 8.6%). The median error rate for Microsoft Band is 5.6% (from 4.9% to 6.3%). The median error rate for the other four devices ranged from 6.5% to 8.8%.

Regarding calorie consumption, including Apple Watch, no device can accurately measure how much heat a user consumes during exercise. The median error rate for these devices ranged from 27.4% (Fitbit Surge) to 92.6% (PulseOn). However, although no device can be accurate, Apple Watch still performs best when estimating calorie consumption.

Overall, the researchers found that in an experimental environment, most motion tracking devices were able to measure heart rate with an acceptable error rate. However, the measurement of calorie consumption is basically inaccurate. In this study, the Apple Watch has the best error rate, while the Samsung Gear S2 is the worst.

The study was conducted by Stanford University and the Swedish School of Sports and Health Services, and the results were published in the Journal of Personalized Medicine.
