The Danish company Universal Robots (UR) launched the world's first collaborative robot in 2008. Collaborative robots don't require a lot of investment, and they pave the way for automation.

The Swedish company Hestra Teknik also took the first step towards an automated manufacturing process with the help of Universal Robots' collaborative robots. Although the company has no experience in this field, it has successfully established a fully functional robotic workstation in less than four months.

Hestra mainly performs cutting programs and uses collaborative robots for loading CNC machines. Therefore, the operator no longer needs to be present at all times. For precise robot guidance, Hestra Teknik uses SICK's 2D camera Inspector PIM60. With this 2D vision sensor, the robot positions the object to be grabbed on the conveyor belt and picks it up and transports it to the machine. Parameters for up to 32 different parts can be saved directly in the 2D vision sensor.

If the robot can "see" it, it will multiply its own possibilities. As the first customer, Hestra Teknik integrated the SICK software Inspector URCap (UR+ plug-in) into the robot controller . With this software, robot applications can easily use the full range of functions that come with the Inspector PIM60. The Inspector PIM60 is an intelligent 2D vision sensor. This means that the sensor can perform all calculations on its own without the need for an external computer.

Especially in the field of robot guidance, 2D vision sensors and robotic operations can be combined: after a short calibration procedure, the URCap software sets the picking position in the robot's coordinate system. In addition, the 2D vision sensor Inspector PIM60 is capable of performing inspection and measurement tasks to determine Pass/Fail criteria or to implement trend displays.

The SICK software Inspector URCap provides a user-friendly interface for integration of the Inspector PIM60 with robots. No programmable logic controllers or other communication systems are required. The solution easily reduces monotonous manual procedures while expanding the use of collaborative robots.
