Brief Analysis of Altera's Typical Vehicle Gateway Controller System

Electronic enthusiast network news : car gateway controller is a router between different electronic and optical buses in the car. It is used to integrate standard multimedia interfaces, such as Universal Serial Bus (USB), Firewire, and media-oriented system transmission (MOST) interfaces, and a controller area network (CAN) interface that can be connected to the body control network. In the future development of automotive systems, various computer-related interfaces may be required, such as Ethernet interfaces and Bluetooth. In some applications, a vehicle-mounted PC also needs to control media devices such as flash memory and CD-ROM drives. In order to complete the routing control function of the gateway, it is necessary to use a small CPU. The gateway controller may be independent of the on-board PC, through which it can provide support for different interfaces, so that the on-board system can communicate with different buses used by different manufacturers.

Figure 1 describes a typical vehicle gateway controller system. Altera's low-cost Cyclone â„¢ programmable logic series is ideal for bridging between different bus systems. With Cyclone devices, designers can use standard low-cost ASSPs to connect to specific bus systems. Taking advantage of this advantage, designers can also customize their systems so that they can interface with bus systems used by different manufacturers, increasing the amount of system usage and greatly reducing development costs. For system vendors, using Cyclone devices means that their designers only need to develop one system, which greatly simplifies the development process.

The various interfaces shown in Figure 1 are all IP cores provided by Altera or partners of the Altera MegafuncTIon Partner Program (AMPPSM). The ideal CPU for this system is the 32-bit Nios® II RISCC embedded processor. Using SOPC Builder, designers can quickly integrate a Nios processor and a flexible bus system composed of various IPs on a device. Cyclone devices play the role of low-cost platforms in such large-capacity applications.
