On October 8 this year, the US Environmental Protection Agency has introduced a new standard for ENERGY STAR evaluation of solid-state lighting products, starting with window shelf lights, portable desk work lights, inline spotlights and outdoor pedal lights, and small street lights.
The new program will start on September 30th, including residential and commercial lighting for general lighting. The DOE completes the plan in two steps. The first step is to get the existing series of products in the market in the early stage, and the second step is to put more stringent performance indicators on future products.
The first set of products will take advantage of the directionality of LED technology to meet the ENERGY STAR program's standards. These products include window shelf lights, portable desk work lights, inline spotlights and outdoor pedal lights, and small street lights.
By 2011, ENERGY STAR will recognize all common lighting SSL applications. Prior to this, the ENERGY STAR program identified several types of lighting applications that were included in the program: some applications including street and district lighting, parking lot lighting, concealed lighting, replacement lights, and wall washer lighting.
