Qualcomm will launch TD-SCDMA chip next year, optimistic about China's 3G
Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs said that the company will launch chips supporting TD-SCDMA, a 3G standard with independent intellectual property rights, to expand its presence in China ’s 3G market and focus on overseas M & A opportunities next year.
According to foreign media reports, Jacobs said he expects Qualcomm China ’s business to have the highest growth rate in the next few years as of the end of 2013. “We think the biggest opportunity is in China because its 3G users are still rare, analysts expect , China's 3G subscribers will grow from 30 million last year to 211 million in 2013. "
China accounts for 23% of Qualcomm's revenue and is its second largest market after South Korea. Jacob did not predict China's future share of Qualcomm's revenue.
Qualcomm is already selling CDMA 2000 chips to China Telecom and W-CDMA chips to China Unicom, hoping to sell TD-SCDMA chips to China Mobile. Jacobs said, "We have reduced our investment in TD-SCDMA chips to focus on market developments. At present, it seems that the TD-SCDMA market will have greater development next year."
Mobile phone chip companies Marvell and MediaTek are already selling TD-SCDMA chips. Compared with W-CDMA and CDMA 2000, TD-SCDMA is relatively immature.
Jacob also said that Qualcomm will consider acquiring other companies to supplement its existing business. As of the end of September, Qualcomm cash and marketable securities were $ 17.7 billion.
