In this regard, Toyota has begun to develop a natural gas fuel cell power system. This system has greater reliability, but the design and workflow are more complex.

According to Toyota, the first step in starting a natural gas fuel cell power system is to break down natural gas into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. At the same time, the compressor also injects air into the mixture and produces electricity through the chemical reaction of the fuel cell stack.

In the process, a part of carbon monoxide and hydrogen exhaust gas is generated, which enters a micro gas turbine, and the combustion process generates more electricity.

In the final step, the power generation system also uses waste heat to generate additional power.

At present, Toyota is testing the natural gas fuel cell system at the Omachi Plant in Japan, mainly to evaluate its energy efficiency, performance and durability.

Toyota said the natural gas fuel cell system can generate 335 horsepower and will undergo a miniaturized design process in the future.

Toyota believes that the natural gas fuel cell system's power generation efficiency is 55%, and with the support of the waste heat power system, this figure will eventually be raised to 65%. At present, the power generation efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells is generally 50-55%.
