Zhongke Chuangda is a Chinese company that designs operating systems for drones and other connected devices. It has just completed an acquisition to strengthen its automotive technology: 64 million euros (4.71 yuan) to acquire Rightware. A company based in Helsinki that develops a graphical user interface for cars. According to the company, their Kanzi products are currently used by 20 car brands.
Lei Feng.com understands that Rightware's 2016 turnover is expected to be approximately 7 million euros (50.83 million yuan), which will be profitable by the end of 2016. The transaction is expected to be completed in early 2017.
Zhongke Chuangda provides operating systems and other platform tools for device manufacturers. The acquisition of a company like Rightware that focuses on providing a graphical interface to automotive systems is a sign that Zhongke Chuangda will seek to provide end-to-end solutions for its customers.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, automakers are turning to external partners who are not only able to provide technology but also provide guidance. (For example, some car companies buy map companies and work with technology companies to develop new in-vehicle systems.)
Founded in 2008, Zhongke Chuangda has been listed in China, and there are strategic support from companies such as Qualcomm and Intel. The acquisition is not only about building its own business in the automotive industry, but also hoping to open markets outside of China. Rightware is the first overseas acquisition of Zhongke Chuangda.
“The automotive market is one of the fastest growing divisions of Zhongke Chuangda, and we will provide solutions for in-vehicle entertainment information and cluster operating systems for customers around the world,†said Zhongke Chuangda’s CEO, He said, in a statement. “The rich application and fully optimized operating system make the car more and more intelligent. Rightware has the best user experience design technology, and this technology will be applied to more connected cars on the market. With RightWare's unique technology, design expertise, and world-class talent, we can bring more value to our customers and leverage our innovations to transform the automotive industry."
Rightware will continue to be an independently operated company. Rightware employees have been around 50 since 2009, but now it is preparing to expand recruitment. The last round of financing it disclosed was $5 million in 2014. It seems that its small and beautiful environment is being challenged more and more.
“In 2022, Kanzi is expected to support more than 25 million vehicles. Together with Zhongke Chuangda, we can further expand our business and provide better support to our customers.†Rightware CEO Jonas Geust is at “We expect the global automotive software market to continue to grow, which is a major positive for Kanzi as an industry standard software solution,†said a statement. “This agreement will further strengthen our position in the fast-growing Asian automotive market. And improve our business in the European and American automotive market."
In addition, it's worth noting that Rightware initially focused on building graphical interfaces for phones and tablets, not cars. This shift itself illustrates how fast the automotive industry is changing today. Today, as the mobile device market slows down, more and more people are beginning to see cars as one of the key "hardware" of networking.
As part of the transaction, Rightware will remain unchanged, and Zhongke Chuangda is committed to continue to invest in the company. Rightware's existing shareholders include Finnish Industry Investment Ltd, Inventure Fund Ky, Nexit Ventures, current management and company founders.
