Switzerland plans to gradually shut down nuclear power plants before 2034 and give up all nuclear power

According to a communique issued by the Swiss Federal Government on the 25th, Switzerland will gradually shut down all nuclear power plants in its territory by 2034 and completely give up nuclear power.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Energy of the Swiss Federal Republic of Leuthardt said in the capital Bern that day that Switzerland decided to gradually give up nuclear power generation. The five nuclear power plants in its territory will cease to operate after reaching the maximum age of 50 years, which means that before 2034 The last nuclear power station in the country will be closed.

The Swiss federal government pointed out that Switzerland will vigorously increase the efficiency of energy use, continue to develop hydropower and renewable energy, and expand energy imports, while developing smart grids and strengthening research and development in the energy sector.

At present nearly 40% of Switzerland's electric energy comes from nuclear power. Since the major earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused a nuclear leakage accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the Swiss federal government immediately announced the suspension of the renovation of the existing five nuclear power plants. Security inspections were conducted and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Communications and Energy was asked to make a firm judgement on the country’s future energy supply prospects.
