LUXEON UV U1 doubles the performance of the industry's smallest UV emitter

Leveraging its leading edge in chip-scale packaging, Lumileds has introduced LUXEON UV U1 LEDs for UV curing, anti-counterfeiting, analytical instruments, inspection and other UV A and violet (380-420nm) applications. These third-generation UV LEDs use the same miniature package size as LUXEON Z UV, but with higher power density. LUXEON UV U1 also has a robust design that does not use materials such as mold silicone that turn yellow and crack under UV light, and gives up wire bonding that can cause serious connection failures. “UV LED customers are all reliability-oriented. They want their equipment to run around the clock and need products that meet their expectations for more than 20,000 hours of operation. LUXEON UV U1 is such a reliable product,” Lumileds UV LED products Line director Yan Chai said.

LUXEON UV U1 LEDs have been tested at 500mA nominally, but can operate at currents up to 1A for higher irradiance. For 395nm UV curing applications, LUXEON UV U1 delivers 700mW at 500mA and over 1300mW at 1A in a 25°C environment. In a larger 3.5 x 3.5mm2 package of UV LEDs, the LUXEON UV U1's exclusive micro package provides superior package density and more than 5x power density. Due to the same size, LUXEON UV U1 can easily replace LUXEON Z UV and provide twice the radiant power of the previous generation in the 380-390nm range (the usual range for UV-fixed applications). Surface mount LEDs are tightly assembled with spacing as small as 200μm for high system flux density. When power conversion efficiency exceeds 45+% and thermal management is improved by AIN packaging, users do not have to use expensive water cooling equipment at the system level.
