Chip manufacturing should focus on power semiconductors

The wide application of power semiconductor devices can realize the transfer and optimal control of electric energy, greatly increase industrial production efficiency, greatly save electric energy, and reduce raw material consumption. In the past 10 years, "No. 18" has promoted China's semiconductor industry has experienced an era of leaps and bounds.

In particular, the integrated circuit chip manufacturing industry drastically shortened the gap with the international advanced level, and not only created a number of 12-inch production lines, but also occupied a place in the global competitive landscape of foundry. However, along the “Moore’s Law” ladder, the costly process equipment and huge R&D expenses have created barriers that put a lot of relatively weak companies out of the door. China's chip manufacturing companies are still in the process of development and expansion. At this time, it is not advisable to blindly compete with international giants for advanced technologies. Instead, they should look for differentiated markets and obtain the best benefits at a lower cost.

Power semiconductors are well-known as a breakthrough in differentiation. Integrated circuit products are faster in replacement, shorter in life cycle and higher in process requirements. These features are particularly prominent in high-end products such as CPUs and memory. Relatively speaking, the power semiconductor device has a long life cycle, and its technology development route does not comply with "Moore's Law", and the manufacturing process does not require the use of the most advanced production technology. For China's semiconductor chip manufacturers, taking power semiconductor devices as a breakthrough in product differentiation should be a wise choice.

From the application perspective, the promotion of power semiconductor devices has a profound impact on energy conservation and emission reduction. The wide application of power semiconductor devices can realize the transfer and optimal control of electric energy, greatly increase industrial production efficiency, greatly save electric energy, and reduce raw material consumption. If the motor drive uses power semiconductors for frequency control, it can save about 1/4 to 1/3. According to statistics, in all electric energy consumption, the power consumption for the motor accounts for about 70%, that is, considering only the motor application, the power semiconductor device can help the whole society to save energy by about 20%.

As the core switching component of high-frequency power electronic circuits and control systems, IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) is undoubtedly the most dazzling star in the field of power semiconductors. IGBTs are widely used in various fields such as industry, transportation, communications, and consumer electronics. IGBTs are also indispensable devices for plasma etching, thin film deposition, and metal plating, which are required for the production of semiconductor chips. At present, about 90% of the power semiconductor devices required in the domestic market rely on imports. The gap between supply and demand is even greater than that of integrated circuits, and IGBTs are almost monopolized by foreign manufacturers.

The Chinese semiconductor industry has long realized that it cannot be limited to integrated circuits. It must have a vision of “big semiconductors.” The late China Semiconductor Industry Association’s director Mr. Chang Zhou’s is also an annual “China. International IC Expo was renamed "China International Semiconductor Expo". However, the pains of our predecessors also required us to spend more time understanding. In the “New 18th Issue” promulgated at the beginning of this year, we still used the lithography linewidth as a benchmark to determine the support for semiconductor companies. It is difficult for companies engaged in power semiconductor production to enjoy state preferential policies.

The 8-inch line is responsible for the vast market prospects of power semiconductors. Shiyuan Technology Engineering Co., Ltd., with its rich engineering design experience in the chip manufacturing industry, endeavors to help domestic companies design and build factories for the production of power semiconductor devices. In 2008, the first domestic 8-inch wafer foundry production line dedicated to power management devices was built by Shiyuan Science and Technology responsible for EPC (Engineering General Contracting). For the production of new power electronic devices IGBT, World Source Technology has also devoted its own efforts. At present, we are designing an 8-inch IGBT production line for our customers in Central and Northeast China. These two production lines face high voltage and low voltage IGBTs respectively, and their products cover the application fields where power transmission, locomotive traction, new energy, motor control, and household appliances are good at.

We are delighted to see that many well-known chip foundry companies in China have also built IGBT technology platforms. In March this year, CSMC successfully developed a 1200V Trench NPT IGBT technology platform; in September this year, Hua Hong NEC and the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly developed the 6500V TrenchFS (Trench Field Termination) IGBT. The phased breakthrough made the domestic independent high-voltage high-power IGBT chips move from design and development to process development to a new level. In fact, at the beginning of Hua Hong NEC's launch of the IGBT technology platform, the industry also questioned the economics of producing IGBTs using 8-inch production lines, but Hua Hong NEC proved the feasibility of 8-inch OEM IGBTs. Of course, due to the close integration of IGBTs and end products, the indicators of device packaging are also very demanding. Therefore, higher requirements are placed on OEMs.

As the production of logic circuits gradually shifts to 12 inches, it is foreseeable that more 8-inch production lines will be engaged in the manufacture of power semiconductor chips in the future. Chinese companies should take advantage of this rare opportunity to acquire second-hand equipment for 8-inch production lines at relatively low prices, and to assemble power semiconductor production lines after refurbishment to seek the highest investment benefits.
