GAC New Energy will focus on the development of driverless cars

At the World Intelligent Connected Vehicle Conference (WICV) held in October, Gu Huinan, general manager of GAC New Energy, delivered a speech entitled "Using Technology to Create a Freer Future of Travel" at a related forum.

Gu Huinan believes that the entire automobile industry is transforming and developing in the direction of "electricity, intelligence, networking, and sharing". Innovation and big data are the strong support behind the products. GAC New Energy is also focusing on the development of driverless cars, and will launch products with L3 autonomous driving functions next year. He mentioned that the shape of future cars and the shape of roads and scenes will change, and the intelligent transportation system will make future travel more efficient and safer.

After the meeting, Gu Huinan accepted an interview from the media including Yiou Automobile. He was full of confidence in the future development of GAC New Energy, and specifically introduced the Guangzhou New Energy Smart Car Industrial Park, which was built at a cost of 45 billion yuan.

Regarding the shape of future traffic and cities, Gu Huinan humorously stated that the future car may be like a bumper car, without a semi-axle, it is circular and can rotate 360 ​​degrees, and can even be combined with drones to fly. The space inside the car is not only used for driving, but may become a playground for children, chess and card room for the elderly, etc. These are all three-dimensional systems formed by the car being separated from the vehicle itself. Based on this type of car, the transportation system such as parking lots and highways will also change.

Regarding shared transportation, Gu Huinan first raised a question: For shared transportation, are there more or fewer cars? So he proposed a "truck-like" sharing method that is different from the existing time-sharing leasing. The shared car is divided into two areas: the front and the rear container, which can be cross-shared separately, and one car may drive several containers and so on. These ideas, or many of them, can provide references for future traffic patterns.

The investment and financing situation is good, and the vehicle and battery plant will be put into production next year

After talking about the vision of the future, and then returning to reality, the funding situation is an important aspect of general concern both inside and outside the industry. After the passenger car market entered September, the entire market showed sluggish sales. But so far, GAC’s annual sales volume has increased, and there are plans for major moves such as the construction of industrial parks.

According to Gu Huinan, the sales of the entire GAC Group have increased by more than 10% so far, especially GAC Toyota, which increased by 36% in September, and users are still queuing to buy Guangfeng vehicles; among the new energy models, Mitsubishi, etc. Models are also lining up.

Although the current auto market is under pressure, the performance of independent brands is not worse than last year. Gu Huinan believes that the main reason for the impact of GAC's sales is the GS4. The delay in the replacement of this model has caused a little impact on the data. In addition, GM8 sells the best, and overall sales are better than last year.

When asked about the "financing and investment" of GAC New Energy and whether it is under pressure, Gu Huinan said: "If one day, even GAC will have difficulties, I am afraid that China's entire economy will have problems. In the data we have Here, GAC’s economic efficiency parameters are ranked high, and it has high-quality resources.” So in terms of funding, he said he was not worried.

In terms of investment, GAC New Energy focuses on hardware such as batteries, high-tech cameras, radars, and related industries such as mobile travel, electric motor control, and software for intelligent driving.

In terms of financing, GAC New Energy specifically raised 15 billion yuan last year, all of which will be used for the development of new energy. In addition, it will also increase investment in intelligent networking. "These investments will not be used up this year and next, and other external social resources also want to cooperate with us." Gu Huinan said.

However, both BYD and Geely have invested in battery factories. In addition to automobiles, GAC New Energy is also bound to participate in the competition and layout in the power battery field. This will also be confirmed by the industrial park that GAC New Energy will soon build.

According to Gu Huinan, the GAC New Energy Automobile Industrial Park costs about 45 billion yuan and covers an area of ​​8,000 acres. The first project to enter is the GAC New Energy Automobile Factory. The factory will be completed by the end of the year with an annual production capacity of 200,000. The first car to be put into production is also a pure electric vehicle, and it has reached the level of L2 automatic driving; in September and October, cars with the level of L3 automatic driving will be launched.

After that, the industrial park will invest in a battery factory that includes motors, electronic controls, and plug-ins. The annual production capacity can meet the installed capacity of 400,000 vehicles, which includes a full set of technologies for batteries and modules. At the same time, the industrial park will also attract hardware companies such as lidars, cameras, and other high-tech companies related to intelligent networking. In addition to manufacturing, there are also areas such as automobile towns and maker areas, with the purpose of providing R&D bases for more than one hundred start-up companies. The industrial park is now under construction and will be officially completed in April and May next year at the latest.

Artificial intelligence is the direction of development, and cars will absorb more capital investment

Yiou Automobile mentioned that in the manufacturing industry, automobiles are not the most profitable, but now industries like Evergrande are entering the automobile manufacturing industry. Regarding the current capital market’s preference for the automotive sector, Gu Hui Nan expressed his opinions. He modestly stated that he is not an expert in finance, but he also has some simple ideas.

He believes that a few years ago, funds were generally invested in real estate, but now the state has introduced policies to curb housing prices, so investment will also be reduced accordingly. In the future, there are two core businesses that will become the main directions of investment: biopharmaceuticals and artificial intelligence.

Gu Huinan explained that because biopharmaceuticals have a fixed target population and a relatively small scope, they cannot raise large amounts of funds quickly. And artificial intelligence involves all the industrial chains of future development, including the service industry, air transportation, industrial manufacturing, and so on. Compared with the world, China’s automobile manufacturing is the most complete industry in the entire industrial chain from upstream, midstream to downstream. We can handle everything from parts to garbage disposal and recycling, so we can handle it from the perspective of automobile manufacturing. Funding is the most direct and most in line with the future development direction.
