Previously, Nate Mitchell, deputy director of Oculus Product Department, said in an interview with Tested: "I don't want to admit I was wrong, but I believe (the third sensor) will include a USB extension in the package." He continued: "When the goods are ready to accept pre-orders at the end of the month, we will announce more detailed information. I'd be happy to share it with you now, but we are still in the final stage of preparation and I don't want to give any mistakes. The goal is that the length of this cable is sufficient for most people's needs."
There are many reasons why users want answers. First of all, Oculus Rift's competitor HTC Vive provides out-of-the-box room scale tracking. The sensor does not need to be connected to the PC through other cables. The HTC sensor is wireless except the power cable. This means that users can place it anywhere in the game area.
However, the Oculus sensor needs to be connected to the PC via a USB cable. There is no problem with a single sensor and there is no problem with the second sensor that comes with the Oculus Touch. However, to achieve true room-scale tracking, the third sensor usually needs to be placed on the back of the user so that the sensor can track the user's movement no matter what direction the user is facing. Although the sensor cable is generally of a suitable length, it is not long enough for the user to place it freely in the room, which is why the USB extension cable is so important.
The additional sensor is priced at $79 and is expected to start shipping on December 6, 2016. The only question that still needs to be answered is how long the extension cord is. According to Iribe, I believe we will know the answer to this question by the end of this month.
