In 2005 and 2006, the solid-state lighting industry's turnover has maintained a moderate single-digit growth rate, but in 2007 the industry is expected to push LED revenue growth to double-digit.
iSuppli predicts that the overall LED market turnover will increase by approximately 13.7% in 2007, the compound annual growth rate in 2006-2012 will be approximately 14.6%, and will reach $12.3 billion in 2012. In 2005 and 2006, the global LED market turnover increased by only 2.1% and 8.7% respectively. These numbers include all surface mount device (SMD) and through-hole package LEDs and alphanumeric display LEDs – including standard brightness, high brightness (HB) and ultra high brightness (UHB) LEDs.
A significant portion of the above-mentioned expected growth will come from ultra-high brightness and high-brightness LEDs for lighting applications. By 2012, ultra-high-brightness LEDs will account for about 31% of total LED sales, much higher than 4% in 2005. The figure below shows iSuppli's forecast of the overall LED market size for 2006-2012.
The key driver of market growth

LCD backlights are still the main LED application
Recently, small-screen LCD monitors and mobile device button backlights are still the largest single application of LEDs in 2007. These applications will account for more than 25% of the total LED market turnover.
LEDs aim at larger LCD backlights
Since 2007, the backlighting of larger LCDs such as notebooks and intuitive LCD TVs is becoming the next important application for LEDs.
The cost of the LCD backlight module (BLU) is still much higher than the traditional CCFL BLU, but the cost of both is rapidly approaching. And LED BLU has performance advantages, such as higher contrast, faster boot time, wider color gamut, and mercury-free, it also helps it be used in LCD.
Some LED suppliers, BLU manufacturers, LCD panel manufacturers and TV/display OEMs are now using LEDs as backlights for large-screen LCDs. Large-screen LCDs using LED BLUs are also starting to ship commercially.
LED: The future of general lighting
The development of high-throughput LEDs with luminous efficiencies exceeding 100 lumens per watt, and the advent of innovative designs, enable LEDs to operate with AC without the need for inverters, thereby driving LEDs closer to mainstream general-purpose lighting.
LEDs have been used in a variety of indoor and outdoor decorative lighting applications, and have begun to focus on niche general lighting applications such as flashlights, garden lights and street lights. These uses are opening up the market for LED lighting in the home and corporate lighting sector.
In addition, the world has stepped up legislation to ban the use of incandescent lamps and encourage the use of energy-efficient light sources. In the near term, compact fluorescent tubes (CFLs) will benefit from legislative actions prohibiting the use of incandescent lamps. But in the longer term, the advantages of solid-state lighting will overshadow the cost difference between LEDs and CFLs. And as LED performance continues to increase, cost differences will be further reduced
iSuppli predicts that LED bulbs will begin to be used for general lighting in residential and commercial applications in 2010. There is no doubt that the long-term future of general lighting is LED. The market is expanding and there are reasons to invest in innovative design and creative solutions.
