China launches the world's largest 4G market chip makers

Since the Chinese government issued 4G TD-LTE licenses to the three major operators, the world's largest LTE market has officially launched. Subsequently, China Mobile announced its ambitious 4G development plan, which is expected to sell 100 million TD-LTE terminals in 2014. China Telecom also announced 4G commercialization in February. This huge market cake is mouth-watering, and LTE chip makers are gearing up. In just over two months, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Meiman, Broadcom, Repost, and ZTE have launched a new generation of LTE chip platforms to compete in the LTE chip market.

Qualcomm's single-volume manufacturer is catching up

In the LTE chip market, Qualcomm's 彪悍 is unmatched, its LTE baseband chip is ahead of other manufacturers' level, and the S800/S600/S400 all support LTE multi-mode, achieving complete coverage from the high-end flagship to the low-end market. Recently, it has also taken the lead in launching the 64-bit mid-range and low-end LTE chip Snapdragon 410 with quad-core A53 to further consolidate its leading position. Of course, the market does not want to have a monopoly and monopoly pattern. The anti-monopoly investigation of the China Development and Reform Commission and the struggling pursuit of other manufacturers will help shape an equal market competition.

MTK 4G took the high-end and countered Qualcomm. Recently, MTK and ARM simultaneously exposed the latest Cortex A17 core architecture, officially released the first 4G SOC chip MT6595, the sword refers to MSM8974 in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 series, MTK claims that only Qualcomm's next chip MSM8084 can catch up with MT6595. Different from the past, this MTK adopts a strategy of developing from high-end to low-end. Its roadmap shows that in the latter part of 2014, the eight-four-core A53 chip MT6752/MT6732 will be launched for the low-end market.

Marvell was once the first in the TD-SCDMA market, but did not keep up with the single-core to dual-core, quad-core evolution and lost the city. For the 4G market, Marvell is clearly prepared. Its LTE quad-core platform PXA1088LTE accurately locates the LTE mid-to-low-end mobile phone market. It is only a commercial case. How to follow-up development remains to be seen.

In the baseband chip market, Broadcom is still the first entrant. At the beginning of last year, Broadcom introduced a five-mode baseband chip model BCM21892, but it has not been commercially available. After that, Broadcom acquired the LTE and SoC related services of Renesas Electronics of Japan. At CES 2014, Broadcom demonstrated the M320 SOC, which is derived from Renesas' SOC platform.

Reposted Branch is a well-known TD chip manufacturer. At the end of last year, it launched the 28nm TD chip "Red Rabbit 6320" and the LTE multimode chip "Red Rabbit 8320". Among them, "Red Rabbit 6320" has been compared with the famous MT6589/6582 in performance and technology. The second-generation LTE chip "Red Rabbit 8320" supports LTE Category 4, supports CSFB and SVLTE voice solutions, and can be upgraded to support VoLTE, which will be mass-produced in the first half of this year.

ZTE has been conducting independent chip layout in the field of TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE in recent years. At present, there is already an LTE quad-mode (TD-LTE/LTE-FDD/TD-SCDMA/GSM) baseband chip WF7510 mass production, and recently exposed WF 7550s. The eight-core processor has been streamlined and joined the eight-core camp, making the industry look impressive. However, like HiSilie, ZTE's chips are mainly used in their own terminals.

Five-mode SOC is the ultimate goal to test the strength of domestic manufacturers

After the issuance of 4G licenses, in order to quickly popularize TD-LTE terminals and rob 4G users, China Mobile changed its previous strategy and no longer required five-mode and three-mode products. This is a first-line opportunity for domestic manufacturers lacking FDD and WCDMA. From the perspective of market competition, the introduction of five-mode SOC chips as soon as possible has become the consensus of all.

Spreadtrum acquired the WCDMA manufacturer MobilePeak as early as 2011, but the commercial path was bumpy until the WCDMA baseband chip was commercialized in the second half of last year. Spreadtrum launched the three-mode LTE chip SC9610 in 2012, but it is unable to reach commercial level. Currently, it is fully developing the next-generation baseband chip SC9620. It is expected to launch the three-mode version first and then upgrade to five-mode.

In the early stage of TD commercial use, Lianxin and MTK jointly earned a full pot. After splitting with MTK, the low end was squeezed by Spreadtrum, and the middle end could not compete with MTK, and the market share was continuously lost. In the LTE market, Lianxin has launched the quad-based baseband chip LC1761, and is currently developing the LTE multimode chip LC1860, which is expected to be launched in the second quarter. From the recent position of Lianxin, it may turn to the priority to launch the three-mode platform, and the five-mode as the long-term evolution goal.

The same is the domestic chip company, the postal letters and credits through the strategic cooperation to fill their own shortcomings. According to informed sources, Repost has established a strategic cooperation with Samsung and won the support of Samsung's outstanding AP and Foundry advanced technology. The baseband has integrated WCDMA technology, and the 28nm five-mode SOC chip C8330 can be launched at the end of the year. The development potential cannot be underestimated. .

At present, international companies represented by Qualcomm still occupy a monopoly position in the LTE chip market and grasp the market voice. However, such a pattern will undergo major changes in the future, affected by the prism door incident, the government's support for the domestic IC industry, and the rise of domestic mobile phone manufacturers such as China Coolian Xiaomi, and domestic manufacturers who are well versed in the Chinese market will have the opportunity to obtain more. A large share.
