Atmel Releases "AGENT" Smart Watch

The “AGENT” smart watch combines the SAM4S and tinyAVR microcontrollers to provide users with longer battery life and consumes more than half the power of competing solutions. Extremely low power consumption is achieved through the use of patented picoPower® technology in Atmel's tinyAVR microcontrollers, combined with the low power RAM retention of the SAM4S microcontroller. The tinyAVR MCU handles maintenance tasks and events, while the SAM4S ARM® MCU handles operating system and watch applications. This combination optimizes power usage and allows the larger SAM4S microcontroller to remain in sleep mode for as long as possible. Moreover, this new smartphone enters flight mode intelligently with a remaining battery life of 10%, enabling traditional watch functions even at low battery power.

Chris Walker, founder of Secret Labs, said: "We are pleased to introduce this smartest, energy-efficient and easy-to-program watch. With Atmel's microcontrollers, we now offer extremely low-power watches with rich features. Developers, we offer a free software development kit that makes it easy for them to develop watch applications that enrich the lives of their users."

“AGENT” is a battery-powered smart watch with a 1.28-inch outdoor readable display, wireless charging and Bluetooth 4.0, which also displays messages from smartphones and integrates with third-party smartphone apps. The new smart watch features a shimmer-resistant glass lens and a unique 22mm wristband.

Andreas Eieland, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Atmel, said: "We are seeing more consumers using smart watches to simplify their busy lives. We feel that Secret Labs chose Atmel MCU to help its next-generation smartwatch collection. Very happy. By combining our AVR and ARM-based microcontroller products, Atmel is able to provide the right power performance for this new smart product. Moreover, we expect software development kits for third-party developers to create new The wave of applications radically simplifies the lives of consumers and adds new entertainment. We look forward to working with Secret Labs to develop future designs."

Secret Labs' "AGENT" smartwatch is now available through Kickstarter.

USB 3.2 Cable

The USB 3.2 specification absorbed all prior 3.x specifications. USB 3.2 identifies three transfer rates – 20Gbps, 10Gbps, and 5Gbps.

Key characteristics of the USB 3.2 specification include:

Defines multi-lane operation for new USB 3.2 hosts and devices, allowing for up to two lanes of 10Gbps operation to realize a 20Gbps data transfer rate, without sacrificing cable length
Delivers compelling performance boosts to meet requirements for demanding USB storage, display, and docking applications
Continued use of existing USB physical layer data rates and encoding techniques
Minor update to hub specification to address increased performance and assure seamless transitions between single and two-lane operation
Improved data encoding for more efficient data transfer leading to higher through-put and improved I/O power efficiency
Backwards compatible with all existing USB products; will operate at lowest common speed capability
